Play/Poetry! Program Our in-school and after-school play/poetry! residency program consists of five one-hour classes held directly on participating school campuses. During the first half of the residency, a teaching artist guides students through classic theater games designed to activate their voices, bodies, and imaginations. In the second half, students are introduced to poetry as a script. Together, they will memorize, rehearse, and present their piece in an open-workshop style performance for friends and family at the end of the session. Throughout the residency, students build confidence and self-esteem, strengthen public-speaking skills, and learn the value of collaboration as they create as an ensemble. Working with a script offers a kinesthetic approach to language—helping words “come alive” as a powerful learning tool. play/poetry! aligns with the California State Standards for Theater Arts and, when appropriate, supports standards in Language Arts and Social Studies.
